In his work, Freek Wambacq starts mostly from existing objects and spaces. He observes them, changes them, rebuilds them, isolates them. During this process, the objects and places commonly lose their function, but not their soul; he reduces the objects and their apparent significance to the essence. Sometimes, nothing is left except a hollowed skeleton of an isolated detail. For Etablissement d’en face, Freek Wamback transformed the space upstairs and the space below to a billiard hall with repetition room joining. Also here, the objects were hollowed, emptied or snapped. Sometimes they had something miserable: the two concrete legs next to the snapped billiard table, the spotlights on the platform in the basement. Sometimes it’s got something of a joke: the small window in the store window, a too short plug, the proud billiard cue holder. Along with the exhibition, a book was available. That book could be read as a kind of sketch book with found and personal material. Moreover, Freek Wambacq realised a web-site with an extensive version of his workbook.
