Le Centre du Monde (The Centre of the World) can best be viewed as the repercussion of a five yearlong artist’s residency, given form in an exhibition. The artist Erwan Mahéo converted his parents’ house into an artist’s residence. It’s an old outlying fisherman’s dwelling on Belle-île in Brittany. This island is a touristic haven in the summer months, but in the winter it’s deserted, and one is then directly confronted with the raw landscape and harsh climate. It’s during this period that visual artists, for the most part, but composers and choreographers as well, are invited to stay for a month. One is free to produce new work or to simply to take in a period of reflection. From the arrangement of the work produced on location, one can however conclude that no one escapes the influence of the environment and its desolaten.
